Hi, I’m David—better known online as WeeMadBeasties—a macro photographer from Scotland with a deep fascination for the tiny, overlooked creatures that share our planet. Based in Glasgow, my photographic journey started with a curiosity about the bugs in my own back garden. What began as casual snapshots quickly turned into a full-blown passion (or obsession, depending on who you ask) for capturing the intricate and bizarre beauty of the miniature world.

Macro photography has opened my eyes to the incredible biodiversity that exists right under our noses. I spend countless hours in local parks, woodlands, and wild corners of the city, camera and macro lens at the ready, searching for subjects most people never notice—tiny spiders, colourful beetles, delicate fungi, and all sorts of strange and wonderful lifeforms. The closer I look, the more fascinating it all becomes.

But my love for macro photography isn’t limited to Scotland. I’ve been fortunate to take my camera on the road (and into the jungle) to explore miniature ecosystems in far-flung places. From the misty rainforests of Ecuador and the steamy tropics of Malaysia, to the pine forests and deserts of the USA and the hidden nature trails of France, every location brings a new cast of characters to discover. Each trip deepens my appreciation for just how diverse and wildly imaginative nature can be—even on the smallest scale.

Macro Photography Tours

In 2025 I started running international macro photography tours, debuting with Ecuador in April which saw me joined by some of the keenest macro photographers from the UK, Austria and the United States for 2 weeks in the Ecuadorian Amazon. You can learn more about upcoming tours on here on the site or follow me on Instagram so you don't miss any announcements.

OM Systems, Cygnustech & beyond

As an OM SYSTEM ambassador, I get to work with gear that helps me push the limits of what’s possible in the field—often handheld, often on my knees or flat on my belly in the dirt. And when coupled with the amazing diffusers from CYGNUSTECH to achive the perfect lighting the results speak for themselves. Check out my kit page for more details about my esstianial kit list and what I'm currently using.

What drives me?

I aim to show people a side of the natural world that usually escapes notice, capturing moments and details that evoke wonder, curiosity, and sometimes a bit of disbelief. Yes, that really is what that spider looks like up close!

My mission is simple: to celebrate the astonishing beauty of the tiny creatures that share our world and encourage others to look closer, slow down, and appreciate the hidden life all around them. Whether I’m deep in a tropical jungle or crouched beside a Glasgow hedgerow, the thrill is always the same—there’s a story waiting to be told in the tiniest of places.
